There are about 400 different dog breeds in the world. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes more than 160 breeds of dogs, from the tiny Chihuahua to the giant Irish Wolfhound.
Dogs are descended from wolves, and all of today’s domesticated dogs come from a single species of wolf that lived thousands of years ago in Asia and eastern Europe. Dogs were probably first domesticated by humans 15,000-20,000 years ago when they were used as hunting companions and guard animals.
Today’s domestic dogs are extremely diverse in appearance, behavior and size. Most dogs can be categorized as either hounds, terriers or working or toy dogs. The AKC divides its recognized breeds into 10 groups: sporting, working, hound, terrier, toy, non-sporting, herding and nongraded (“all other”).The Labrador Retriever is a large, strong and athletic dog. The head is wide and deep with a pronounced stop. The muzzle is long and strong but not too heavy, the jaws are powerful.
