It is a large, dual-purpose breed that lays brown eggs and is tolerant of cold weather better than most other breeds. Australorps thrive on confinement but do not do well on grass alone; they require more protein than most other breeds due to their rapid growth rate so should not be fed just grass clippings or weeds only
