It has two distinct subspecies, the eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) and the Osceola wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo osceola). As far as we know all domestic turkeys are descended from either Meleagris gallopavo silvestris or Meleagris gallopavo osceola. The birds that were domesticated were probably hybrids between these two subspecies because they are genetically very similar.
