The Norwegian Forest Cat is a breed of domestic cat native to Norway, but also popular in other parts of the world. It has been recognized as a national cat breed in its native country since 1963 and internationally since 1987. The breed was developed from semi-wild forest dwelling cats that had been preserved in remote areas of Norway, including parts of the region of Värmland and the island of Rügen.
The International Cat Association (TICA) recognizes four variations of the Norwegian Forest Cat: Longhair, Longhair Brown Tabby, Longhair Blue Tabby and Longhair Black. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) recognizes three: Longhair Brown Tabby, Longhair Blue Tabby and Longhair Black.
