How Many Different Breeds Of Cats Are There

The International Cat Association recognizes 42 breeds of cats. The American Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes 41 breeds of cats. The Cat Fanciers’ Federation recognizes 37 breeds of cats.

The four major cat registries (International Cat Association, American Cat Fanciers’ Association, Cat Fanciers’ Federation and Fédération Internationale Féline) all recognize the same breeds.

CATS are amongst the most popular pets in the world. There are many different breeds and types of cats, each with their own particular characteristics and behaviour.

The domestic cat is a subspecies of the wildcat (Felis silvestris), a small, carnivorous mammal that is believed to have evolved from the African wildcat at least 10,000 years ago.

Cats have been kept as pets since ancient times, but it was not until the nineteenth century that cat shows became popular in Europe and North America. These were followed by breeding associations for Siamese cats (1878), Persian cats (1887) and Burmese cats (1889). The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy was established in Britain in 1903, followed by registration schemes for pedigree cats in other countries including Australia and New Zealand.

Cats come in all shapes and sizes from tiny kittens to giant lions. The smallest is the Singapura which weighs about 3 kg when fully grown; the largest are lions which can weigh around 300 kg. Most breeds of cat are medium-sized, however. There are over 70 recognised breeds of domestic cat with various markings such as tabby or solid colouring; there may be more than one breed

How Many Different Breeds Of Cats Are There

There are many different breeds of cats, but they can all be grouped into three main categories: short-haired, long-haired and hairless.

Short-haired (also known as a “domestic” or “common” cat) has fine fur that’s soft to the touch. These cats were bred for their ability to hunt and live outdoors.

Long-haired (also known as an “oriental” or “foreign” cat) has fur that is longer and thicker than a short-haired cat. These cats were bred for their appearance, since they tend to have more visible coats.

Hairless (also known as a “devon rex”) has no fur at all! This is an unusual trait that was developed in the 1950s when two hairless kittens were born in England.

There are about 39 species of wild cat in the world, but only about a dozen or so are commonly kept as pets. The most popular domesticated cat breeds include the Siamese, Abyssinian, Savannah, Maine Coon and Ragdoll.

There is also a wide variety of hybrids that have been created by cross-breeding different types of cats. These include:

The Bengal cat was first bred in 1963 by crossing an Asian leopard cat with a domestic shorthair. The resulting offspring have spots and rosettes similar to those found on leopards and jaguars. Bengal kittens can cost up to $1,500 each!

The Chausie is a longhaired version of the Jungle Cat from Southeast Asia.

The Egyptian Mau is named after a type of cat that was once worshiped by the Egyptians as early as 4,000 years ago.

Havana Browns were developed by crossing Siamese and American Shorthairs with solid brown cats that originally came from Cuba or Mexico City. They were imported into Britain in 1908 where they were bred with other breeds until they became established as a breed in their own right during World War II when many British cats died during bombing raids
