There are about 10 different breeds of guinea pigs. They vary in size, appearance and temperament.
Some of them are:
Abyssinian – This breed is known for its long hair and short, stubby legs. Its fur is dense and soft with a grayish-brown coloration.
Crested – This breed has hair that grows from the top of its head down to its back like a Mohawk haircut. It also has a tuft of hair on its forehead as well as tufts on both sides of its face that resemble tiny horns. The coat is generally white or cream colored with black markings around the eyes and ears that run down the face to a point between the eyes.
Dwarf – These pets have shortened bodies compared to other breeds which makes them easier to carry around when they’re not running around your house like crazy! They also have longer hind legs than most guinea pigs so they can jump higher than other types of guinea pigs. Dwarf guinea pigs come in several colors such as black, brown, red and white among others.
Himalayan – This type of pig has a thick coat which covers most of their bodies except for their heads, feet and tail which are bare skinned.*
Guinea pigs are a favorite pet for many people. They are small and easy to care for, but they do require daily care. There are several different types of guinea pigs, including the American guinea pig and the African pygmy guinea pig.
How Many Different Breeds Of Guinea Pigs Are There
Guinea pigs come in many different breeds and colors. Some breeds can live up to 10 years, while others have life spans reaching only 3 or 4 years.
Guinea Pig Breeds
There are many different breeds of guinea pigs. Some have very long hair while others have short fur. The most common breeds include:
American guinea pig: The American Guinea pig is one of the oldest breeds of guinea pigs, originating in North America in 1770s and brought over by European settlers as domestic pets. They are known as “true” guinea pigs since they do not resemble rats or mice at all like some other species do. They have short hair on their body but long hair on their head that can be up to 12 inches long! They can grow between 5-10 pounds when fully grown, with an average life span of 4-6 years old.
Guinea pigs are one of the most popular pets in the world. They’re intelligent, fun to play with, and easy to care for.
Guinea pigs are rodents that come from South America. They can make good pets for kids who want a gentle animal that isn’t too hard to take care of.
There are many different types of guinea pig breeds, including:
American cavy (or domestic guinea pig). This is the most common type of guinea pig in North America. It has light-colored fur and a short tail that’s usually white or light gray. The American cavy is larger than other breeds and can weigh up to 2 pounds (0.9 kilograms).
Peruvian guinea pig. These little guys have dark colored fur and upright ears that curve back toward their heads instead of sticking straight up like on some other breeds. Peruvians also tend to be smaller than American cavies — sometimes weighing just 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) or less when full grown!
Teddy bear guinea pig (also known as “teddy bear hamster”). The teddy bear hamster is also called the dwarf hamster because it doesn’t live very long — usually only two or three years at most
There are two main breeds of guinea pig: the American and the English. The American is larger than the English, and it has a longer body and ears. Its fur is longer and silkier than that of the English, too.
The English is smaller than the American. Its fur is coarser and shorter than that of the American, but it still has some length to it.
Both breeds have very long tails, which they wrap around themselves when they’re frightened or cold. They also have large eyes with dark pupils, which makes them look like they’re always staring at you! Guinea pigs also have very short legs, so it’s hard for them to run very fast.
Guinea pigs are a popular choice of pet, as they are relatively easy to care for and have a low maintenance diet. They come in a variety of colors, including black and white, brown, gray and white, white with brown spots or pink with white spots. Their average lifespan is four to seven years.
Guinea pigs are herbivores — they eat plants. Guinea pigs consume hay and grasses in large amounts every day. Hay provides them with the fiber they need to help digestion function properly. Grass helps them regulate their body temperature by allowing them to sweat through their skin when it becomes too hot or cold. Guinea pigs also need fresh water every day in order to stay hydrated.
A healthy guinea pig diet should consist of hay (timothy or oat hay), fresh greens such as parsley, cilantro and celery leaves, fresh fruits such as bananas, apples and melons, as well as commercial guinea pig pellets that contain vitamin C in addition to all of these ingredients along with other nutrients needed for proper growth and development of your pet companion.
