Spaying or Neutering of your pet

Spaying and neutering is important to prevent pet overpopulation, as well as for the health of your pet. Spaying a female prevents her from having kittens, while neutering a male keeps him from impregnating females in heat. Both procedures reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, diseases and behavioral problems in both cats and dogs.

PetSmart Charities provides financial assistance for spay/neuter surgeries through our Pets For Life program (up to $75 per animal). This includes ferrets!

Initial Vaccinations (Rabies, DHPP & Leukemia)

The initial vaccinations are important because they help prevent your new pet from contracting serious diseases. The Rabies and Distemper combination vaccine is required by law in most states and should be given to cats one year of age or older. The Feline Leukemia (FeLV) vaccine is recommended for cats who will be spending time outside unsupervised, but it’s not required by law. If you live in an area with a high incidence of rabies virus, you may want to consider vaccinating your cat against this disease as well.

Initial Vaccination Cost: $15 – 20 per dose

Initial Vaccination Cost without Rabies: $10 – 15 per dose

Feline Leukemia/FIV Combo Test*

The Feline Leukemia/FIV Combo Test is a test that checks for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. Cats infected with either of these diseases can develop severe symptoms, including fever, weakness, weight loss or anemia. The Feline Leukemia/FIV Combo Test checks for both diseases at the same time.

The test may be recommended if your cat shows any signs of illness such as:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting

De-worming/flea treatment

  • De-worming: This is a preventative measure, so if you’re unsure of your cat’s history or if your cat has been outdoors, it’s a good idea to get this done.
  • Flea treatment: This can be a good idea if your cat has fleas. They are not very expensive and they can stick around even after de-worming (which is why it’s good to do them together).

Microchip including lifetime enrollment with 24PetWatch.com

Microchips are implanted under the skin of the neck and are the size of a grain of rice. They provide a permanent way to identify your pet in case they get lost or stolen, making them more likely to be returned to you.

Conclusion

Most importantly, when you adopt from a PetSmart Charities Adoption Center, you save twice. You give an animal in need a second chance at life and make room for another pet who may need a home. That’s something worth purring about!
