Angus – One of the most popular and widely used beef cattle breeds in the U.S., Anguses have been raised for centuries in Scotland and Ireland, where they were originally known as Angus cattle. They were imported to America by Scottish immigrants who brought them over in 1773. The breed was further developed in the early 1900s when it was crossed with Brahman cattle from India and shorthorn cows from England. Today, Angus beef is known for its high quality marbling and tenderness.
Hereford – The Hereford breed originated from Herefordshire County in England during the 1500s when it was first used for pulling plows and other farm work before becoming a popular beef cattle breed throughout Europe during the 1700s and 1800s. In 1855, 20 Herefords were imported into Texas by Thomas Allen where they became known as Texas Longhorns until being crossbred with other breeds such as Shorthorns, Longhorns, Gelbviehs, Durhams and Galloways to produce what we now know as beef steers today.
